On a scorching summer day at the picturesque Teddington Cricket Club, the MJCA U11 County League Knockout Final witnessed a thrilling contest between two local rivals—Old Merchant Taylors (OMT) and Stanmore. With both teams eager to claim the coveted title, the stage was set for a memorable clash.

OMT won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to post a competitive total under the sun. The opening partnership between A. Patel and N. Wadhwa started cautiously, with both batters finding their rhythm against a disciplined bowling attack from Stanmore. Their steady progress saw them put on a partnership of 27 runs, although Stanmore’s seam and spin bowlers kept things tight throughout.

The breakthrough for Stanmore came courtesy of O. Kosmin, who took two quick wickets in succession, followed by another from K. Malde. With OMT at 37 for 3, Stanmore’s bowlers were in control and looking to bowl out the opposition cheaply. But OMT’s K. Shah and K. Gupta had other ideas. The pair rebuilt the innings with composure and flair, adding a vital 66 runs together before K. Shah was dismissed. R. Singh and K. Gupta then polished off the remaining overs, taking OMT to a total of 121 for 4 off 20 overs—an achievable target, and one that would require tight bowling and sharp fielding from the OMT side to defend.

In reply, Stanmore’s chase got off to a rocky start, as OMT’s opening bowlers, R. Singh and K. Gupta, wasted no time in removing Stanmore’s opening pair. By the time they had taken 2 quick wickets, Stanmore had only posted 10 runs. OMT’s spinners, K. Shah, and twin brothers R. Wadhwa and N. Wadhwa, then continued to strangle the Stanmore batting, claiming wickets at regular intervals.

As the innings progressed, M. Patel came into the attack and showed his skill with some pacey swing bowling, producing a series of well-executed deliveries that kept the pressure on. OMT’s fielding was simply flawless throughout, with every player contributing with stunning stops, sharp catches, and quick throws to the stumps. The fielding effort was a crucial element that kept Stanmore’s chase in check.

Despite some spirited resistance from the middle order, Stanmore ultimately fell short of the target, finishing their innings at 108 for 9 off 20 overs. The game was played in great spirit, with both teams giving their all. OMT’s combination of clinical bowling, outstanding fielding, and steady batting was enough to see them through to victory by 13 runs, securing the 2025 MJCA U11 County League Knockout title.

In the end, it was a noble, well-fought battle between two teams full of talent, with OMT emerging as worthy champions.

The Middlesex U17s Championship final produced an exciting contest, Old Merchant Taylors CC U17 defeated Uxbridge CC U17 by 51 runs to claim the title.  Batting first, Old Merchant Taylors set a competitive total of 161 for 6 in 20 overs. The innings was anchored by Mohan, who scored 40 from 26 balls with an aggressive strike rate of 153.85, supported by IKaria who added a lively 32 of 26 deliveries including 3 sixes and Dhalla with a composed 29. Khan contributed a quickfire 25 from 17 balls, while 16 extras boosted the total.

Uxbridge’s bowlers fought hard, with Khawaja (2-27) and Syal (2-33) picking up key wickets, and M Khawaja keeping it tight with 1-7 from 3 overs.

In reply, Uxbridge struggled to build consistent partnerships and were restricted to 110 for 8 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target. F Khawaja (35 off 28) and A Khanshah (17 off 17) tried to keep the chase alive, while Syal (15) and Khatker (13) offered support.

Old Merchant Taylors’ spin bowlers dominated, with Matta (4-23) and Mohan (2-26) taking key wickets and maintaining pressure throughout. Extras also proved costly for Uxbridge, contributing 14 runs. Tight fielding, including a run-out, further curtailed their momentum.

OMT’s balanced performance — solid batting, disciplined bowling, and sharp fielding — ultimately proved decisive. Uxbridge showed resilience in patches but could not recover from early setbacks and regular breakthroughs by OMT’s attack.

Old Merchant Taylors CC U17 lift the U17 Championship trophy after a well-fought and disciplined performance, while Uxbridge CC U17 can take pride in their spirited effort in a competitive final.

On Sunday 27th July 2025 Highgate Cricket Club in North London hosted the MJCA Girls League Knockout Final between Highgate CC Girls U15 and Sunbury CC Girls U15.  Highgate qualified as the Middlesex North Area winners with Sunbury winning the South area.  It was an early 09:30 start, with bright sunshine looking down as Highgate won the toss and put Sunbury into bat on a green wicket, with one short-sided boundary in need of protection.

Highgate opened with a mix of spin from at one end and pace at the other.  Sunbury’s got off to a watchful start negotiating some tricky deliveries from the skilled Highgate bowling attack. After ten overs Highgate had restricted Sunbury to 47 runs however both openers remained intact.  Sunbury then accelerated through their batting innings. The remaining ten overs accruing a further 81 runs to set a total of 128 for Highgate to chase.  Sunbury openers Phillips and Gillespie reached 48 and 44 respectively and a total of five wickets fell in a late effort to push the total.  There was one wicket apiece for Highgate’s Captain Bernstein, Ogilvie and Nannayakkara with all six bowlers used conceding few runs, Patel, Shaw and Bernstein the pick with economies of 4.

In reply, Highgate also batted carefully through the opening overs with Sunbury opting to begin with slow bowling. Highgate’s run rate followed a similar pattern to Sunbury’s with 37 runs off the first ten overs and an acceleration through the remaining ten. Sunbury did manage to pick up early and regular wickets throughout the chase, the first a good overhead catch by Gala. These wickets pegged back Highgate somewhat.  Despite a flurry of late runs Highgate ended 29 runs short, leaving Sunbury of winners for the day.  Nannayakkara ended with 28* and was ably assisted by Bernstein, 26*.  The low economies of Sunbury’s bowlers helped secure the result, from four overs each – Ramsbottom 1 wicket for 8 runs; Catley 1 wicket for 9 runs; Mansfield 2 wickets for 16 runs; and Gillespie 1 wicket for 13 runs.

It was a keenly contested match, played with great spirit from both teams who should both be proud of how they represented their clubs.  To cap their day, Sunbury were fortunate to be presented the trophy by non other than Middlesex and England’s Angus Fraser.
