The success of the Women’s World Cup won by England in 2017 and watched by millions around the globe has propelled Middlesex cricket to the attention of sport loving girls across the county. Several of our MCA league girls were invited to be flag bearers for the historic final at Lords, and they even had time to demonstrate their talents in the mid-session break.
When the first men’s cricket World Cup final was held at Lord’s in 1975, women were not allowed to play at the London ground considered the sport’s spiritual home. Four decades on, England’s female cricketers sold out Lord’s, with more than 26,500 supporters watching them win the world cricket laurels (something that the men’s team have never managed).
“We know Lord’s has been one of the last bastions of male superiority,” said Clare Connor, director of England women’s cricket and a former England captain. “We should see this game as unbelievably symbolic and use the power of that to drive the changes that are needed for the sport to grow.”
