It was a golden summer for the South Area with record temperatures and sizzling cricket from all the teams throughout the leagues. We had sixteen cricket clubs playing in twenty three league and cups competitions. Here are some of the highlights from 2018 (to see the full table from each league or cup competition then follow each separate link).
2018 MJCA County Championships; U15 winners, Teddington CC (above)
“In the regular season Teddington finished runners up to Sunbury in the U15s MJCA South Division, who had recorded a 10/10 100% record. Teddington qualified for the MJCA County Play-offs by finishing runners-up to Sunbury in South Division. In the County Play-offs knock-out season, Teddington negotiated Indian Gymkhana, Hornsey, Highgate and Osterley before facing local rivals Sunbury in an “all South Division” County Championship Final, held in 2018 at Sunbury. Games between these age groups have been close through the years and the County Final continued that pattern, Teddington batted first and raced to a flying start before being pegged back to 143. Sunbury’s batsmen were always close to the required run rate and inevitably the game went to the last ball, Teddington winning by 5 runs”
Richmond CC U15s: 2018 County Cup Winners and South Area Cup Winners (above)
Richmond CC U15s won the South U15 Cup to become the area champions before winning the County Cup and becoming the county’s representative in the nationals in which they beat Surrey’s representative (Esher) to win the London and South regional before losing in the last 16 in Horsham. Under 10 Championship play off
The under 10 league is the first year of competitive cricket for many of the teams so the South Area has a play off to determine who is the ultimate Under 10 champion. Hampton Hill CC (2nd Div 2) beat Richmond CC (1st Div 1) in their semi-final while Sunbury (2nd Div 1) beat Ashford CC (1st Div 2). In the final Sunbury CC proved too strong for Hampton Hill CC and they were crowned overall Under 10 Champions. – Under 10 Championship Play-off
Under 11 (Division 1)
It couldn’t have been any closer in the top tier of Under 11 cricket with both Teddington CC and Richmond CC winning the same number of games and finishing the season on 64 pts each. Teddington CC won by virtue of having the highest average runs per wicket (runs scored / wickets lost) in their head to head matches vs Richmond CC. Under 11 – Div 1
Under 11 (Division 2)
It was a much more decisive title win for Indian Gymkhana in Division 2. They won 7 out of their 8 games and were well ahead of runners-up Sheen Park CC, Twickenham CC and Wycombe House. Under 11 – Div 2
