Another competitive year in the MJCA South Area this year with nearly 100 teams contesting leagues and cups throughout the season. We welcomed a new club into the South family with City Cranes CC joining the U9 league. Clubs and players adapted well to the new pitch lengths that had been recommended by the ECB. The biggest challenge this year was the weather with some teams losing over a third of their matches to rain. Yet this didn’t dampen enthusiasm for the game and the superb cricket that was played across the South Area.
MJCA South Area Leagues
Under 9
An informal league to encourage participation and fun at the youngest age group. Although there was no official winner, some of the results can be seen here – Under 9
Under 10 (Division 1)
With 10 teams in the league it was a busy summer for Division 1 managers and players. The indefatigable Sheen Park CC were unbeaten this year with 7 magnificent wins. Sunbury CC were clear runners-up with 6 wins and 3 losses. – Under 10 – Div 1
Under 10 (Division 2)
Division 2 was dominated by Kew CC, with 6 wins and only 1 loss they were 20 points clear of their nearest rivals Hampton Hill CC. Under 10 – Div 2

The league was dominated by the unbeaten Sunbury CC who racked up 8 wins in their 2019 campaign. Teddington CC were runners-up with 6 wins but lost 3 games to the weather unfortunately. Under 11 – Div 1
Under 11 (Division 2)
It was a great year for Sheen Park CC with their Under 11 team remaining unbeaten throughout their league matches. Although the weather played its part across the league Indian Gymkhana were worthy runners-up. Under 11 – Div 2
Under 12 (Division 1)
Another unblemished record saw Richmond CC win the Division 1 championship but it was a close contest with both Richmond CC and runners-up Teddington CC winning 5 matches each. Under 12 – Div 1
Under 12 (Division 2)
It was a theme of this year that Sheen Park CC once again won a league with an unbeaten record. This time their 6 game winning run was 2 more than their nearest rivals Kew CC. – Under 12 – Div 2
Under 12 (Division 3)
It was an exciting year in Division 3 with Hampton Hill CC and Teddington Town CC trading blows throughout the season. Both beat each other and won 4 matches each but it was Hampton Hill CC who ultimately topped the table, pulling 16 points clear of their rivals.
Under 13 (Division 1)
Indian Gymkhana CC have a habit of winning this league, last year their unbeaten run saw them crowned champions and this year was no exception. Richmond CC and Teddington CC were runners-up, both winning 4 matches and losing 2. Under 13 – Div 1
Under 13 (Division 2)
An unbeaten league record for Wycombe House CC with 6 winning results gave them the title over nearest rivals Twickenham CC – Under 13 – Div 2
Under 13 (Division 3)
One of the closer leagues this year with Hampton Hill CC triumphing over runners-up Bushy Park Girls CC courtesy of a win in their opening match. Under 13 – Div 3
Under 14 (Division 1)
With an impressive 74 points total and an unbeaten league record Indian Gymkhana CC won Division 1 this year. Sunbury CC were clear of the chasing pack and finished with a very creditable 60 points from their 8 matches. Under 14 – Div 1
Under 14 (Division 2)
Only two points separated the top two in Division 2, unfortunately rain affected the much anticipated head to head against the subsequent winners Wycombe House CC and their rivals Hampton Hill CC. Under 14 – Div 2
Under 15 (Division 1)
After dominating the Under 14 leagues last year it was unsurprising that Richmond CC would evolve into a superb Under 15 outfit. They cruised to the Division 1 title with Teddington CC just pipping Sunbury CC to the runners-up spot. Under 15 – Div 1
Under 15 (Division 2)
It was a closer run thing in Division 2 but the depth of talented at Richmond CC shone through once again. There wasn’t much to separate Hampton Hill CC, Wycombe House CC and Hampton Wick CC but it was the former who edged ahead due to their superior bonus points. Under 15 – Div 2
Under 17 (Division 1)
This proved the most exciting of the leagues this year with both Teddington CC and Sunbury CC finishing on 125 points after their 8 games. With both teams winning against each other it came down to the highest average per wicket in their head to head matches. Sunbury CC won the league, in no small part due to a wonderful century from Aaryan Pillai in the first match against rivals Teddington CC. Under 17 – Div 1
Under 17 (Division 2)
It was a double winning year for Sunbury CC in the Under 17 leagues as their B team took the Division 2 title too. For the second year in a row Ashford CC claimed the runners-up position. Under 17 – Div 2
Cup Competitions
The South Area dominated the 2019 County cup competitions, winning three of the four age groups and being runners up in the other final. The pride of place must go to Indian Gymkhana CC who won the Under 13 Middlesex competition and went into the national cup as Middlesex representatives. After winning the south east area at Teddington, Indian Gymkhana CC went to Rugby school for the national semi finals and final. After winning their semi final were narrowly beaten in the final.
Richmond CC were the Middlesex Under 15 winners but were beaten in a regional match against Slough.
Sunbury CC were winners in the Under 11 Middlesex Cup, comfortably beating Ealing in the 30 over per side final. see below
Sunbury CC’s Under 17s almost made it a South Area whitewash but in the end were beaten by Ealing in the county 40 overs per side final.
On the domestic front, Richmond CC beat Sheen Park to win the South area U12 cup.
Indian Gymkhana CC won the U14 area cup beating Sunbury CC in the final.
Sheen Park CC and Hampton Wick Royal CC represented the South area in the U10 Gubby Allen trophy, both being eliminated at the semi final stage.
U11 County Cup Winners – Sunbury CC (pic above)
Unbeaten in their league season, Sunbury also won the South area section of the U11 county cup. In the County section, Sunbury fairly comfortably defeated Brondesbury in the semi final by 7 wickets, leading up to meeting Ealing in the 30 overs per side final at Wembley CC.
Batting first, Ealing were soon in trouble losing two early wickets to Sunbury’s opening attack of Raphael Taylor and Freddie Stewart. The introduction of James Fennelow gave the Ealing batsmen further problems. Fennelow produced a devastating spell taking 6 wickets for 12 runs in his 6 over spell. Further wickets from Hicks and Aggarwal ended the Ealing innings at 103 from 27 overs.
Sunbury replied with an opening stand of 51 between Fennelow and Matthew Gillespie. Euan Amyatt – Leir joined Gillepspie and took the score to 89 – 2 wkts before Amyatt – Leir was dismissed for 16 in the 18th over. Another wicket fell before Aggarwal and Gillespie reached the target of 104 in the 20th over with Gillespie not out 41, giving Sunbury a 7 wicket victory with 10 overs to spare.
