Due to the COVID-19 pandemic the South Area cricket leagues started in July and finished in September this year. Despite a curtailed season the cricket was competitive and everyone appreciated the opportunity to play and socialise together. The emphasis was on participation rather than league positions, so below is a partial season review. The South Area welcomed a new chairman, Ralph Meyer, who succeeded the long serving John Ventham.
MJCA SOUTH AREA LEAGUES
Under 9
An informal league to encourage participation and fun at the youngest age group. Although there was no official winner, some of the results can be seen here – Under 9
Under 10 (South)
A competitive league with the top two teams, Sunbury CC and Teddington CC, both beating each other with away wins. Sunbury CC ultimately topped the league on 72pts, with Teddington CC second on 52.
Under 10 (North)
The league was dominated by two teams, Sheen Park CC and Wycombe House CC. It was Sheen Park CC who won the league, beating their nearest rivals twice and remaining undefeated throughout the league season.
Under 10 Development
Eight teams competed in this league, Sunbury CC, Richmond CC, Teddington CC, Teddington Town CC,
Hampton Hill CC, Hampton Wick Royal CC, Richmond CC and Moormead CC. Not all results were entered but at the time of writing Sunbury CC were leading the pack.
Under 11 (North)
The indefatigable Barnes CC dominated the league with 5 wins from 5 matches. Their nearest rivals were Sheen Park CC.
Under 11 (South)
Like their Under 11 Northern counterparts Sunbury CC were also undefeated in the league. With 6 wins from 6 matches they topped the table with 60pts with Teddington coming second with 30pts.
Under 11 (Central)
It was a battle of the B teams with Teddington CC winning the league undefeated this season. Their nearest rivals were the B team of fellow Bushy Park cricketers Hampton Hill CC.
Under 12 – Div 1
A flawless season from Sunbury CC with a high scoring campaign. The stand out score being the 205 runs they wracked up against Barnes CC at the end of August. Wycombe House CC edged into second place by just 2pts from nearest rivals Ashford CC.
Under 12 – Div 2
Congratulation to Teddington Town CC who were clear winners of this competitive league, they finished 20 points clear of second placed Teddington CC (B team) and Hampton Hill CC (B team) in third.
Under 13 – Div 1
One of the closest leagues this year with only 18 points separating top from bottom. Indian Gymkhana CC took the top spot with Sunbury CC (2nd) and Richmond CC (3rd) not far behind.
Under 13 – Div 2
This eight strong league produced some memorable cricket with Wycombe House CC dominating it from start to finish. Their unbeaten winning streak of 7 matches earned them the title. They were closely followed by Richmond CC Under 15 Girls team with 5 winning results.
Under 14 – Div 1
It was a thrilling season in the Under 14 league with just 4 points separating the top 3 teams, Indian Gymkhana CC, Richmond CC and Teddington CC. It was Indian Gymkhana CC who secured the title with their final match on September 9th.
Under 14 – Div 2
With nine teams in Division 2 it was a busy time for all clubs, but one that proved rewarding in its variety. Top of the bill were Sheen Park CC who were followed by second place Hampton Hill CC.
Under 15 – Div 1
It couldn’t have been closer at the top of the Under 15 league this year with Sunbury CC just pulling ahead of Wycombe House CC. In fact a tied match for Wycombe House CC against Richmond CC was the knife edge on which the league was decided.
Under 17 – Div 1
Another close league with the top two teams both beating each other in a ding dong battle. In the end it was Richmond CC who claimed the title with Teddington CC in second place.
Under 17 – Div 2
Despite losing their final game against their nearest rivals it was Ashford CC who won the league. Kew CC were an admirable second, fighting right to the end of the season.
